WLR Precision Engineering was founded in 1969 as WLR Prototype Engineers, making prototypes and test pieces for the aerospace industry. Fifty-five years later the machines have changed considerably and the demands have not: parts that hold tolerance, in materials that resist being cut, with paperwork that proves it.
What we machine for aerospace customers
Prototype and development components, low-volume production parts, and test pieces — the work that sits ahead of or alongside a production run rather than inside it. Our customers are typically equipment and sub-assembly manufacturers rather than primes.
Materials
Nickel alloys including Inconel and Waspaloy, titanium, Hastelloy, stainless and aluminium, plus Invar and Kovar where thermal stability matters, and PEEK where metal is not the answer.
These are the materials that make aerospace machining difficult rather than merely precise. Nickel alloys work-harden if the feed drops, titanium holds heat in the cutting zone, and both punish a shop that is learning on your part. We machine them regularly, with proven tooling and parameters.
Tolerance and inspection
Milling to five simultaneous axes with Renishaw probing and laser tool measurement, in a fully air-conditioned works — thermal stability being the difference between a part that measures correctly first thing and one that does not.
For components beyond ordinary machining limits we run KERN ultra precision centres to micron levels.
Inspection is in house on CNC coordinate measuring machines with scanning and optical measurement. We do not subcontract verification of our own work.
Traceability and material verification
Material identification, manufacturing information and customer specification stay with the component throughout production, on every job as standard.
Where alloy grade and composition have to be proven rather than taken on trust, we verify material with Positive Material Identification equipment. For aerospace work — where a substituted or mislabelled alloy is a serious matter — that is worth more than a certificate alone.
Quality certification
We operate an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system, certified through ISOQAR.
Finishing and treatment
Anodising, chrome and nickel plating, Xylan, HVOF plasma coatings, heat treatment, hardness testing and non-destructive examination, supplied through our partners to your specification and approved vendor list.
