Components for Special Purpose Machinery Builders

Special purpose machinery projects frequently require components that cannot simply be purchased from a catalogue.

Unique shafts, housings, brackets, tooling, fixtures, mounting components and precision mechanisms may all need to be manufactured specifically for an individual machine or application.

WLR Precision supports machinery manufacturers with CNC machined components produced to drawing, CAD model and customer specification.

From prototypes and development parts to one-off components and repeat batches, our machining and inspection capabilities are well suited to bespoke machinery projects.

CNC Machining for Bespoke Machinery

Special purpose machinery often develops throughout the design and build process.

A component may initially be required as a prototype before being revised following assembly or testing. Drawings may change, quantities may be low and the final part still needs to meet precise dimensional requirements.

WLR combines CNC milling, CNC turning, 4 and 5-axis machining and comprehensive inspection within one Nottingham manufacturing facility.

Electronic model files can be imported into our programming systems, allowing complex geometry to be converted into CNC machining programs.

This gives machinery designers access to a machining supplier capable of supporting both straightforward parts and more complex precision components.

Prototypes and One-Off Components

The first version of a machine rarely requires production quantities.

WLR has manufactured prototype and development components since the company was founded in 1969 and continues to support customers requiring one-off and small-volume precision work.

This makes us suitable for components required during machine development, design validation, assembly and testing.

Where designs evolve, revised drawings or models can be reviewed before subsequent components are produced.

Repeat Parts for Established Machine Designs

Once a special purpose machine has moved beyond development, components may need to be manufactured again for additional machines, replacement assemblies or future build programmes.

Our CNC manufacturing systems allow established components to be produced consistently across repeat orders.

For appropriate quantities, multi-pallet milling, automated CNC equipment and bar-fed turning can provide an efficient route for repeat manufacture.

A Wide Choice of Engineering Materials

Different areas of a machine can place very different demands on a component.

WLR machines materials including aluminium, stainless steel, brass, titanium, Inconel, Super Duplex and engineering plastics including PEEK and acetal, alongside a number of specialist alloys.

We can also coordinate customer-specified coatings, plating, heat treatment and other external processes where required.

Inspection for Critical Machine Components

Accuracy is particularly important where components form part of an assembly, locating system, moving mechanism or precision process.

WLR has a dedicated inspection department incorporating CNC CMM equipment, scanning, optical measurement and other specialist inspection technology.

Inspection requirements can be matched to the component drawing and customer specification.

Material and component traceability is also supported through WLR’s computerised production system.

Send Us Your Machinery Component Drawings

If you’re designing or building special purpose machinery and require precision machined components, send WLR your drawings, CAD models and required quantities.

We can review the manufacturing requirement and provide a quotation for prototype, one-off or repeat components.
